AMHERST, Ohio – The heart of Amherst is home to some of the most dedicated sports fans.
“It gives you adrenaline,” said Clarissa Thomas of Lorain. “As soon as the engines start, the smell of the rubber burning… it’s exciting.”
Hundreds of locals head to Lorain County Speedway every Saturday night, for what Dan Booth calls the ride of a lifetime.
“I’ve been coming here for the last 48 years,” said Booth, of Lorain. “My dad raced out here. I raced out here for 5 years. It’s the sound of the motor. The fans of just the racing. It’s good competition.”
The Speedway first came to Lorain in 1949, when it was a one-third mile all-dirt track. In the early 60’s it was transformed to its current three-eighth mile asphalt oval, with 12 degree banking in both turns.
“They have contests with and a lot of things for the kids and the adults. The entertainment is stupendous,” Booth said. “Most tracks don’t get as many cars as Lorain County does.”
Track manager and racer Mike “Faster Pastor” Haury said just about every week this summer, the Speedway will feature special events. Some of the highlights include fireworks displays, the Duct Tape festival and autograph night, where you can get right down on the track and meet the racers.
“It’s racing entertainment for the whole family,” Haury said. “Sit close to the action You’ve got to feel the thunder. Cars continue to change, fans to continue to have great excitement, and it’s speed. It’s thunder. It’s noise. It’s Lorain County Speedway.”
Lorain County Speedway is open from now until mid-October. Races are scheduled every Saturday and other select days this summer. The track is located at 9100 Leavitt Rd in Amherst. Parking is free.
