ANTHONY, Kan. — After earthquakes shake parts of Kansas this weekend, insurance companies say many people are now looking at ways to protect their homes.
Most insurance plans do not provide coverage for anything outside of wind, hail or tornado damage, said Marilea Strumble of Strong Insurance in Anthony.
“Most people don’t know that earthquake is an option on your insurance coverage,” she said.
For those who want to have peace of mind with this influx of quakes, she said plans are relatively inexpensive.
“The additional premium that we’ve found has been very affordable,” Strumble said. “I think the insured or the homeowners needs to just realize that the deductible is going to be a little higher.”
The deductible, some say, can be about 2 percent.
Some insurance agencies say that plans can be as low as $20 a year, but others may pay $70. Strumble said prices are based on multiple factors.
“You know, they base it on construction, your location, whether you have a brick home or a frame home, whether you’re a home, farm, business, so there’s a lot of things to consider,” she said.
