Investigators are trying to determine what caused an extensive house fire in southeast Salina.

Fire crews were called out around 7 a.m. to the 1900 block of Valley View Drive.

They found a house fully engulfed in flames, said Salina Fire Department Capt. Bill Srna. It appears the fire may have started on the east end of the home, making its way toward the west side. Investigators believe it’s a total loss. The owner was at the home at the time, but was able to make it out safely.

“Crews went to an initial interior attack, but heavy fire conditions, they had to back out to a defensive attack,” Srna said.

Srna said older homes post an extra challenge to fire crews because of materials used. The roof of the home was made of wood.

“You’re not real sure how long with a fire as heavily involved as this,” Srna said. “You’ve got to be a lot more cautious as far as roofs or floors coming in on you and things as such.”
