When an EF4 tornado struck Manhattan, Kansas, in June, Annette Lawless grabbed her camera and started filming.

In a single day, she turned over four stories as a TV reporter for Topeka’s ABC affiliate, dodging debris to give a human face to the $20 million disaster.

“It was probably the most heartbreaking and heartwarming experiences of my live,” Lawless says, “I got to know all of these people who lost everything.

A former sex columnist for the Kansas State Collegian at Kansas State University, Lawless moved to Wichita in August to work as a producer for KWCH 12.

“I’m going to love and make the most of my surroundings,” she says. “That’s what life is all about.”
