Cleveland State soon may tear down its very first dormitory.
The university is applying for a $2 million grant that would help tear down Viking Hall. The former dorm was built in 1971, and has been an eyesore on campus for years.
Viking Hall and a neighboring building at the corner of 21st and euclid could go down as early as this November.
University President Ronald Berkman said as of now, there aren’t official plans for the space. The school is looking into retail, classroom and other options for the unused land.
“It really is another piece of making the univeristy a neighborhood,” Berkman said. “Something where we can get high occupancy during the day, that serves our student interest, our research interest, etc.”
Construction of the new buildings could start as early as 2013.
