AKRON, Ohio–It’s a big celebration for the Spicocchi family of Massilion
“A lot of people that say, ‘how do you do it, I can’t imagine what your life is like,’ said mother Amie Spicocchi. “Being faced with what we were faced with last year really puts things into perspective.”
They are celebrating their first birthday of the Spicocchi quintuplets: Ilah, Paige, Enzo, Ellie and Gia.
The babies arrived nearly four months ahead of their November 20th due date, but they are thriving.
“You can’t even describe how blessed we are, that we’re in this position,” said father Vince Spicocchi. Today, Gia was the last one to start crawling, so all five are crawling. They all say ‘da-da’ and ‘ma-ma.’ They’ll shake their head “no,” sometimes a lot.”
This is the first of many milestones for the four girls and one boy. Amie and Vince said this year, they’ve learned a lot of things that work and some that don’t.
“Everything in our life is scheduled ,and it makes the day run smoother than not,” Amie said. “It gets a little monotonous, but we know what to expect, the babies know what to expect.”
Although things have gone quite well for quints, Akron Children’s Hospital Dr. Diane Langkamp said there may be bumpy times ahead.
“Very premature babies like this are at risk for speech and language delays as well as other types of delays, as well as issues when they get to school,” she said.
Yet, brother Grady, 5, and big sister Taylor, 15, will help keep things in line in the meantime.
“I love them. They give me kisses,” Taylor said. “I hope with feedingg them, playing with them, giving them baths and helping with the laundry.”
A life multiplied by five. It’s a big change from what it was just a year ago.
“To think where we are, and how amazing that it truly is that we’re here,” Vince said. “They’re all here and they’re all healthy.”
