CLEVELAND–College kids will do just about anything for a buck, but Andrew Brumbaugh will do anything for five.

“I can’t seem to get hired for regular jobs,” said Brumbaugh, a student at Cleveland State University. “I was a freelance writer for a while, and that turned out to be not as fruitful as I wanted it to be, so I explored Fiverr, and here I am.”

The senior, majoring in creative writing, is a featured seller on Fiverr–it’s like the eBay for job sites, where anyone can buy or sell work for $5 a piece.

The website launched in 2010 and is now home to 500,000 gigs.

Popular jobs include voice-overs, Tweets and logo designs. Brumbaugh mostly writes for people.

“I’ve had anything from dental care to physical therapy to adults sites, everything,” he said.

Brumbaugh has seven gigs on the site. He said the most popular is writing a search engine optimization article for the web. A SEO helps a website gain more visibility on the Internet.

He’s sold more than 200 successful jobs, earning more than $1,300 since April.

Yet, Brumbaugh’s work isn’t just limited to writing.

He’s integrated Cleveland landmarks into his work, like writing a message in chalk in front of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.

“It’s probably the most famous place in Cleveland now,” he said. “So many people walk by. Your website can be on the sidewalk in front of it, or wherever it happens to be.”

With graduation next year, Brumbaugh’s looking for a permanent gig, but he’s not ruling out full-time work on Fiverr.

“I’m not sure,” he said. “Maybe I can make part of a career out of it, the rest of my career otherwise. We’ll see.”
