CLEVELAND–The Browns are on a hot streak.
Now, the team is sporting a new color: pink.
“When the fans come, they will see pink ribbon field stencils, goal posts, the players will be wearing their pink apparel, the cleats, their wristbands,” said Renee Harvey, community outreach director for the Cleveland Browns.
The makeover is a part of the NFL’s A Crucial Catch campaign to raise breast cancer awareness–and fans love the move.
“Everybody can wear pink,” said Cleveland resident Caroline Pickett Jones. “There’s nothing wrong with pink, and if you can support breast cancer that’ll be the best thing right there.
More than 200,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer and 40,000 women die from it each year.
“We’re trying to encourage women, starting at the age of 40 to get their annual exams, to get their mammograms and hopefully early detection can help save some lives,” Harvey said.
But the pink fever isn’t limited to the field. The Brown’s website will also showcase the bold color throughout Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October.
“Real men wear pink and the guys have really championed the cause,” Harvey said. “Coach Holmgren: his wife Cathy is a breast cancer survivor. But it’s made it’s way into the locker room, unfortunately, as well. Scott Fujita: his mother has endured two bouts with breast cancer. Josh Cribbs, unfortunately lost his grandmother.”
They’re some of the toughest guys in the NFL, hoping this new fashion statement will inspire the community.
“Wearing pink is a great idea,” said Trini Bowman of Cleveland. “It’s good for breast cancer awareness. We love our women.”
