CLEVELAND–From T-shirts to water bottles to the things you eat, pink is everywhere.
Retailers are cashing in on October’s Breast Cancer Awareness month, but shoppers should be wary about what they shop.
“I think we need to be careful about that. because not every pink product is giving back to a worthy cause,” said Sophie Sureau of Susan G. Komen of Northeast Ohio.
Though a number of products have a pink ribbon on the box, not all donations are considered the same.
“So really looking at the packaging is very important,” Sureau said. “If it’s not stated who it’s going to and how much it’s giving back to the cause, I would avoid encouraging the purchase of that product.
So before you shop, Sureau said to read the label first. Reputable organizations should explain how much your purchase will contribute back to breast cancer research.
