CHARDON, Ohio–It’s home to the black and red, but there’s a hot, new color at Chardon High School.
“If you’re walking down the hallway and not wearing pink, everyone’s like, why aren’t you wearing pink?” said senior Ashley Karcic. “People are wearing their bandanas and their tall socks, and everyone’s just really pinked out today.”
The Hilltopper’s biggest fans are from the student section, dubbed the Chardon Crazies. They are pinking it out for the big game against Riverside.
Over the past few days, the students decided to swap their school colors and make T-shirts to raise money for benefit breast cancer awareness.
“We thought we were only going to be starting with 50 shirts. A day at school we sold 148 shirts. ” said senior Brady Lawrence. “People love it. We’re going to keep selling them. We’re going to have to make more. So many people asked me today if they had more shirts.”
The project was completely student-driven and truly surprised administrators, but Lawrence said the support’s been overwhelming. The students have raised more than $1,000. Now, they’re talking about pinking out other sporting events during the school year.
“Real men wear pink. I’ll just put that out there,” said senior Matt Leskovec. “I expect that our guys out there will play a great game. I know they’re confident. We’re confident and no matter the outcome, we’re raising money for a good cause, so we’ll always have that.”
