WOOSTER, Ohio–Local residents are raising awareness by putting on their dancing shoes.
Wooster Community Hospital is among 138 hospitals competing in the National Pink Glove Dance competition–a video contest to raise awareness for breast cancer.
“It was a lot of fun,” said social worker Krista Asher. “I felt like everybody was there for the same reason, and that was what made it so exciting.”
The video took weeks to created and has become a bit of a YouTube hit, with more than 6,000 views. It now ranks among the top third communities participating, with a grand prize of $10,000 up for grabs.
The money will go to benefit the hospital’s breast cancer center, but in order to win, they need people to go online and vote, said Tricia James, development specialist for the hospital.
“It took weeks to coordinate, to storyboard and choreograph the dances, but it was worth it,” she said.
Local schools, businesses and breast cancer survivors were among the thousands who slipped on the pink gloves and strutted their stuff.
“It’s incredible,” she said. “The love between all the couples. It just shows that they fought together, they helped each other and that they survived.”
Breast cancer survivor Heather Nicolozakes was among those featured in the video. She said it’s was a great opportunity to show the importance of early detection.
“In the past month, three of my friends were diagnosed and all three of them need minimal treatment,” she said. “They had their surgeries, and they’ve needed minimal treatment. so we’ve come a long way.”
