Attention, shoppers! Peanut butter prices are on the rise.
Reports show companies are increasing the cost of some jars by 20 to 40 percent.
“I don’t think we’ll be able to buy peanut butter until it goes back down,” said Carrisa Holliman of Cleveland.
The peanut butter price increase stems from this summer’s extreme heat, which reportedly destroyed the peanut harvests in states like Georgia, Texas and Alabama.
The price of other peanut products will likely be effected.
“I think it’s an outrage,” said Vanous Merkerson of Cleveland. “Peanuts are used in various products. It’s more than just candy bars, for cooking oils and things of that nature. I think something should be done about this.”
Despite the price increase, parents like Darshon Oneal said he plans to keep buying the product. The spread is so popular it’s in about 90 percent of American households today.
“My daughter actually loves peanut butter,” Oneal said, “and if I don’t bring some peanut butter in, it’s going to be a problem.”
However, Oneal admits among the change, he fears one thing.
“The price of jelly,” he said. “Yeah, then that would be really, really bad.”
