The holidays are almost here, and if you’re strapped for cash, you may want to turn to a part-time mail carrier job.
United Parcel Service plans to hire 55,000 workers this holiday season — that’s up 10 percent from what they hired a year ago.
FedEx is hiring 20,000 workers this year — about an 18 percent increase.
“There’s 20 business days between Thanksgiving and Christmas and through that time, corporately, our volume will go up 60 percent,” said Jim Petsock, human resource manager of UPS in Cleveland. “Our peak day is Dec. 22, where we’ll deliver 26 million packages.”
Petsock said online sales contribute a big part to the hiring spree.
With more shoppers heading to the web, the more the company will likely deliver.
In the 10 days leading up to Christmas, UPS expects to carry 120 million packages worldwide.
But Petsock admits this holiday season, he has one thing on the company wish-list.
“The biggest problem we have would be what mother nature throws at us,” he said. “A big snowstorm is not a fan of ours through Christmas season. Let’s hope we only get snow on Christmas Eve.”
