AKRON, Ohio – Some call it the crown jewel of the local sports scene.
This summer, the Akron Aeros has exciting adventures for the whole family, said Calvin Funkhouser, of Akron Aeros baseball.
“It’s a great family environment, for one. It’s safe. It’s affordable. It’s very entertaining,” he said. “Every Friday home game this year, we’re going to have fireworks, and starting in June, every Saturday night we’ll have fireworks as well.”
Home of the 2009 Eastern League champs, tickets to games are as low as $5.
This year, the team will be joined by celebrities and groups like inflatable cartoon-like ZOOPerstars, the cowboy monkeys of Team Ghost Riders and fan-favorite midget-wrestling, Funkhouser said.
“We have a little bit of something for everybody,” he said. “Bring the family out. It’s a great night out. Get the kids away from the TV and video games for a night and come out to Canal Park.”
For those looking to savor their appetite after the game, Funkhouser said many head to Applebees, another local favorite.
The home of burgers, steaks and wraps – Applebees offers a diverse menu, with happy-hour food and drunk deals throughout the week, said James Donald, general manager of the Montrose Applebee’s location.
“We have a great atmosphere. We’re familiar orientated and we do a lot for the community as well,” he said.
Donald said many customers enjoy the late-night specials, like half-priced appetizers.
But other specials, like the “Two for $20”deals are also popular.
“On Two for $20, we have two new pastas,” Donald said. “We have the blacked chicken penne as well as the steak penne. As well as the most popular items, which is a bourbon chicken and shrimp. It’s a fun place to work and it’s a fun place to visit.”
