HUDSON, Ohio – It’s a project that’s been on the backburner for decades, but many are celebrating the latest addition to Hudson: Hudson Memorial Stadium, a $5.5 million high school sports complex.
“We’re finishing up with the general amenities of the stadium, and we are right now, in the process of finishing our surface of our track, which will be another wonderful component for programming for our students,” said athletic director Ray Ebersole.
The school was built about 20 years ago. Initially, the district made plans to build a football stadium behind its location on Hudson Aurora Road. But, the project didn’t move forward until 2009, when the community stepped in to help.
Entrepreneur Tom Murdough donated about $3 million to the stadium’s construction. Ebersole said. Ever since, hundreds have contributed to the $5.5 million facility, completely funded by the community.
“For those folks to respond like that and come together rather quickly and make that happen is really indicative of the community we have here in Hudson,” Ebersole said.
In March, the district broke ground for the facility, located behind the high school. It includes a track and football field that can seat 5,000 people.
“It’s pretty phenomenal what the differences are,” Ebersole said. “We have the all-weather turf is ready to install. Seating capacity is almost double what we enjoyed before.”
At the entrance of the complex is a garden in honor of Scott Malson, a former athlete who died at a young age. Malson’s family also made significant donations to the project. They also funded a new football field for the middle school and a practice facility at the high school, which is slated for construction later this year.
Inside the stadium is a five-stone memorial in remembrance of those who’ve served, said Steve Farnsworth, Hudson City School superintendent.
“The stones represent the branches of the services and then on the other side of each stone is a list of those who are from Hudson and who have passed away in service to our country,” Farnsworth said.
“I can’t imagine another community where so much good could happen without a single school tax dollar,” Farnsworth continued. “And I’m so proud of this Community and for those who’ve contributed and worked so hard toward this effort.”
Hudson Memorial Stadium is located behind the high school at 2500 Hudson Aurora Road.
The community is invited to come celebrate at the ribbon cutting ceremony at 5:15 on Thursday, Aug. 23.
Friday night, veterans in uniform will receive free admission for the first game against Kenston. Kickoff is at 7 o’clock. A special military ceremony will take place during the game.
