CLEVELAND – Case Western Reserve University inks a deal to give students training around the world.
Today, the university signed an agreement to exchange dental students with the Rambam Health Care Center in Israel.
“We are creating a bridge between two institutions. Case Western is one of the oldest dental schools in the state, while ours, the dental school in Rambam is one of the youngest in our country,” said Dr. Eli Machtei, head of Rambam Health Care Center’s School of Graduate Dentistry.
“The way that we do dentistry is different in Europe than it is in the U.S. Different philosophies, sometimes different preferences,” Machtei said. “I think, and I’m hoping, that the students we accept in the program will be able to train and learn different philosophies on both sides of the Atlantic.”
Foreign students will spend one year studying in Israel. Then, those students will begin two years of study at Case Western’s School of Dental Medicine.
The program, set to start next year, will also allow students to participate in the school’s specialty programs, said Jerry Goldberg, dean of Case Western’s School of Dental Medicine.
“I think they key to the success of this program lies in the fact that these institutions are so well aligned in quality, interest in research and providing quality education,” Goldberg said.
Students will be recruited from Russia, the Far East, India and other foreign countries.
All classes in Israel will be in English to ease the transition when arriving at Case Western Reserve University.
“Our institutions are both very high quality and they both will offer students an unusually very positive experience,” Goldberg said, and they will come out as dentists who are very highly qualified to take care of both very difficult cases and also patients with significant medical problems. So, they will be able to treat and take care of a segment of the population that really needs extra kind of care.”
