AVON, Ohio – A local hair salon is styling women for free in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The JCPenney Salon at Avon Crossing is offering complimentary haircuts and styling for breast cancer patients and survivors. The offer also extends to all cancer patients and survivors.
”I thought it was amazing,” said Anna Marie Sgro, a local survivor. “It’s very nice. People do care.”
Sgro was diagnosed with breast cancer nine years ago. Her daughter, another survivor, referred her to the salon for a haircut.
“I like my haircut,” Sgro said. “This is great. That’s what you call making a different. People do care and make a difference, so I am happy.”
Stores nationwide are also joining the fight for a cure. For every service performed this month, stores will donate $1 to the Breast Cancer Research fund of America.
Thus far, the chain has collected about $750,000. The Avon store hopes to raise $50,000, said Laurel Wagner, JCPenney Salon leader.
“It’s been wonderful,” Wagner said. “It’s been really great to touch these people, you know, that even though they’ve been through a rough time in their lives, we can help them look and feel their best.”
For the month of November, Sundays are going to be “Kids Days” at JCPenney in Avon, Wagner adds. School children enrolled in kindergarten through sixth grade will get complimentary haircuts.
The salon encourages people to schedule an appointment, but Wagner says walk-ins are also welcome.
