LAKEWOOD, Ohio — A beloved family pet was mauled to death at the Spooky Pooch Parade on Saturday, Lakewood police reported.

It happened just after 1:30 p.m. near St. Charles Ave.

Police say a Lakewood woman was getting out of her car with her two dogs — a male mastiff and a female rottweiler — which were leashed.

Another woman, from North Royalton, then walked by with her Pomeranian, which was also leashed. That’s when, according to police, the mastiff shook and killed the Pomeranian.

The rottweiler was not involved in the attack, police said.

The North Royalton woman was walking with her daughter and 3-month-old granddaughter when her Pomeranian, Presley, was attacked.

Her daughter posted the graphic details on the Darwin Dogs Facebook page:

“The mastiff bit Presley in the stomach and from his blood curling scream we instantly knew he was wounded badly. My mother tried to pick him up but both dogs attacked again, the mastiff grabbed Presley by the neck, shook him and snapped his neck.”

The Lakewood dog owner will be charged with allowing her dog to attack another dog. The city will also schedule a dangerous dog hearing to determine the future status of the animal, police said.

The incident is under investigation.
