WARRENSVILLE HEIGHTS, Ohio – Hundreds of people flocked to Cuyahoga County Community College Friday, hoping for one thing.
“I need a job. I’m looking for a job. I saw it on the news last night, actually on Fox 8,” said David Swann of Cleveland Heights. “I decided to come out and see what’s going on.”
Swann headed to the Thistledown Racino’s job fair. He hopes to snag one of the 600 jobs that the company plans to fill by spring.
“I have lot of experience, a hard worker,” Swann said. “I need a job bad and am willing to do anything to get there.”
That determination is something Karen Kaminski admires. She’s the vice president of human resources for Thistledown.
She says there are a few key things people need to do to land one of the jobs at the North Randall race track.
KNOW THE REQUIREMENTS
No experience is necessary, but applicants must be 21-years-old and undergo a criminal background check. Other than that, Kaminski said applicants must have one thing.
“We’re looking for individuals who have a great, upbeat and positive personality and just a genuine passion to serve the public,” she said.
JOBS THEY’RE HIRING
Kaminski said the company is looking to hire people in a variety of departments, including food and beverage, VLT services, racino services, security, marketing, finance, human resources and wardrobe.
MASTERING THE INTERVIEW AND RESUME
Kaminski said that interviews could start as early as next week, but people should prepare for them ahead of time.
On Saturday, Tri-C’s Corporate College is offering free hour-long lectures on interviewing and résumé writing.
“The interview is really vitally important, and a lot of times people don’t take as serious the interview as they do the résumé,” said Gary Convertino, a human resources expert and college professor. “I think we need to turn that around a little bit. “
Convertino said when people are interviewed, they should bring a portfolio of their work.
“A portfolio of your history is very important to bring to the interview process,” he said during one of Friday’s lectures. “This puts into tangible, touchable object what you say you can do into a resume. Something that can back up what you say.”
Convertino also said people should prepare a two-minute pitch on why they are qualified and deserving of the job.
The Thistledown Racino informational job fair will continue from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19. It’s located at Cuyahoga Community College’s Corporate College East, 4400 Richmond Road, Warrensville Hts.
