BRUNSWICK, Ohio – Flames broke out in a townhouse early Wednesday morning, claiming the life of an elderly woman.

Brunswick assistant fire chief Rick Barber said it took 22 firefighters one-and-a-half-hours to control the blaze on Doral Drive. Six area fire departments worked on the scene.

“It came in as a medical alarm into our dispatch, and we arrived, subsequently police department arrived,” Barber said.

When firefighters got inside, they found the body of 78-year-old Delia Kuzda.

The Brunswick Fire Department said the woman was often confined to a wheelchair.

She was believed to be trapped in her bathroom, where she perished.

“It’s just a very tragic day,” said neighbor Kevin Whelan. “She was a nice woman. Kept to herself pretty much. But said greetings anytime anybody saw her. We just hate to see this terrible thing happen.”

According to police and fire reports, no other people were injured, though two neighboring units were damaged. The fire caused an estimated $250,000 in damages.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
