CHARDON, Ohio – The Sandy Hook school shooting hit close to home for the community of Chardon. Now, Chardon students have found a way turn the tragedy into something good.
Life in a middle school isn’t always easy, but 7th grader Jarret Salm said at Chardon, students are looking out for one another.
“I’ve seen a lot of people trying to help people more. Seventh graders in the community, teachers trying to help people more,” said Salm.
A small group of high school students, like Caylynn Hill and Dominic Ferrante, hope to spread goodwill.
“Our goal for the middle school was to be like, mentors to them and to share the actively caring message to them,” said Hill, a high school junior.
“To take like, a kindness campaign; like we’re doing and turn it into something really cool and let people know that we care for everyone else,” said Ferrante, a freshman.
The members of ‘Actively Caring for People’ have spent the past few months working with these middle school students, and hope to take this message global.
After the Sandy Hook school shooting, students wanted to pay tribute to the victims with a YouTube video featuring 27 random acts of kindness in honor of the 26 victims and another for the three boys killed at Chardon High School.
Chardon students are documenting their 27 acts with t-shirts provided by the Chardon Healing Fund. They hope the message inspires others to pay it forward.
