LAKEWOOD, Ohio – Five days after a Lakewood man was run over by an RTA bus, he dies from his injuries.
Joseph Milan, 46, was trying to catch the bus close to his home, near Detroit Avenue and Warren Road in Lakewood. The accident happened around 5 a.m. on Monday, June 10th. He died Saturday night at Metrohealth Medical Center, where he was getting treatment.
“A subsequent investigation was that he had missed his morning bus, was running after the bus and was trying to get the buses attention and slipped and fell under the wheels to the bus,” said Lakewood Police Capt. Gary Sprague.
Sprague says the driver was unaware of the accident and kept driving.
“You`re probably not going to notice anything,” he said. “It might not be as noticeable as a pothole, simply because the gentlemen’s legs were under the bus and had a tendency to compress with the bus wheels.”
A woman found Milan on the road with injuries to his leg. According to police, he lost a substantial amount of blood.
Lakewood Police says because the incident appears to be an accident, the RTA bus driver may not face any criminal charges.
On Sunday, the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority released this statement:
“Everyone at RTA offers our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Joseph Milan. We will continue to cooperate with Lakewood police investigating the incident.”
Friend tell Fox 8 that they hope the accident helps bring awareness to bus driver safety – something Mila had actually fought hard with the RTA in the past.
They say that’s the least the community can do for Milan, a guy who was passionate about politics and loved to fish.
