Employers want something very specific. They know what they want.

While attending a seminar, I sat at a table with a couple news directors.

We engaged in decent conversation. I thought things were going well.

Then a college senior sat at the table. She was pretty. Seemed nice. Yet, she was texting a majority of time.

I thought she was a tad disrespectful (but not knowing the situation, it’s hard to know the truth.)

But what got me floored was that one of the news directors gave her his card.

After several minutes of engaging conversation and charm, he gave someone else the shot.

And it was then I realized, maybe there was something I did wrong.

Maybe he liked her better. Maybe it was her looks. Or her charm. Or just something else.

In a world of maybe’s, I’ll never know.

And that’s how this industry is.

Nothing’s definite.

Stations have a limited number of goals: money and ratings.

Outside of that, it’s a formula.

They need a female anchor here or a male reporter there.

I hope that my next employer will be daring enough to brush against this tedious idea of what works.

I’d like to work for a company that’s bold. One that takes risks. Because it’s through those risks that you can achieve true greatness.
