BEREA, Ohio– From the cotton candy to the Ferris wheel, the Cuyahoga County Fair already has attracted thousands of people this week.
Yet, one event is making just about everyone in Berea squeal – and that’s the pig races.
“We just got here and we’re just looking around and then we saw this and we heard it’s only 10 minutes left,” said nine-year-old Joshua Kennovin. “It’s unusual for pigs.”
Dozens of people packed the stands for the free event, as they watched four little piglets: Arnold Swartzenburger, Kevin Bacon, Brad “BBQ” Pit and Jerry Swinefeld.
The pigs, which are 12 weeks old, raced their way over hurdles before crossing the finish line.
“They went through the things and they jumped over it and they were like the pigs when they came out,” said 10-year-old Ethan Stanaczyk. “The pigs sometimes didn’t know what to do.”
The staff members who run the stand say, however, pigs are the fourth-smartest living creatures on the planet. Kids like six-year-old Thomas Niere have yet to be convinced.
“There was these hurdles,” he said. “Some pigs did the hurdles, but the other pigs just ran.”
The pig races run multiple times throughout the day.
People can attend the Cuyahoga County Fair if they arrive before 3 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday.
The fair ends on Sunday.
