Construction at the Wichita Mid-Continent Airport is about a year underway, and the City of Wichita says Terminal 3 will arrive right on time.
The airport gave KAKE News and Wichita City Council members a sneak peek of the construction site Thursday morning.
Jim Armor, the resident engineer for the City of Wichita, says right now, they are working on exterior walls and concrete. The plan to have the $100 million terminal building fully enclosed by next spring. Armor said large windows and skylights are being installed to help spruce up the facility and cut down on energy costs.
Soon, construction crews will work on the baggage claim and flooring areas. These sections will take the longest to fulfill — about 9 months — because of the strict federal guidelines they must fulfill.
Along with Terminal 3, a $30 million parking garage will be added to the airport. It will have spots for 1,600 vehicles.
The City says the new additions will make room for more than 2 million travelers a year — about a 25 percent increase from its current travel numbers.
The construction project is expected to complete by March 2015.
