As temperatures continue to soar, it may be tempting to crank up the air conditioner.

However, electric companies are asking people to change their energy habits to stay cool and save money.

The Sedgwick County Electric Cooperative launched its new “Beat The Peak” campaign, asking customers to avoid using electronics during the hottest hours of the year — 3 to 8 p.m. from June until September.

“By reducing our energy use, even in small amounts, we can save big,” said Dave Childers, general manager of the Sedgwick County Electric Co-op.

Childers said last summer, its 6,000 customers reduced their overall energy use and saved $388,000.

The Co-op suggests that people avoid using washing machines, vacuums and other high-powered electronics during the day.

They also encourage people to increase their thermostat a few degrees about their preferred temperature.

“We want to be sure everyone’s safe,” Childers said. “Raising the thermostat is one of the biggest ways that people can reduce their demand, but we would not want anyone to jeopardize their safety or any of their loved ones or anything by going without air-conditioning or fans or something when it’s extremely hot.”
