Kelly Pitcher is still stunned after his early morning drive to work on Tuesday.
He said as he was driving through the intersection at Oliver and 21st Street at 4 a.m., a car approached him from the other direction.
“I happened to see, I don’ t know, it looked like a lighter inside the car, and I heard this huge explosion inside my truck,” he said. “Honestly, it scared the hell out of me.”
Nothing appeared wrong, so Pitcher kept driving to his job on the East side of town. He was surprised the moment he stepped out of his SUV. The middle of his windshield was cracked.
“In good light, I’d seen it. I thought it may have been a gunshot, but I wasn’t for sure,” he said.
He said later he took his vehicle to Wichita Police.
“They kind of looked at it, and they said it and it looked like a gunshot, like a small caliber — .25- or .22-caliber — something like that,” Pitcher said. “They said anything bigger probably would have went through.”
Pitcher plans to take his vehicle in for repairs Wednesday afternoon. He’s thankful that’s the worst of the situation.
“Tons of things, you know. It could have came through. It could have came through a different spot and hit me,” he said. “Kind of a scary moment actually.”
