Investigators are looking into the suspicious deaths of two children this past week in Saline County. The deaths are two separate cases — one involving a 18-month-old and one involving a near 4-month-old child.

CHILD DIES AFTER HEAD INJURY

The Saline County Sheriff’s office says a child was injured on Nov. 6. with head injuries. He was rushed to Salina Regional Health Center, where he was admitted into surgery.

The 18-month-old child’s injuries were significant enough to require additional treatment at Kansas City hospital, where he died two days later, said Lt. Brent Melander of the Saline County Sheriff’s Office.

BABY FOUND NOT BREATHING

In the early evening of Nov. 11, a baby was found not breathing in a north Salina home, said Salina Police Lt. Scott Siemsen.

“The baby was in the bed, was unresponsive and was transported to the hospital and was later pronounced dead at the hospital,” Siemsen said. “Any time you deal with an infant death it’s really bad and for the family especially. It’s not anything anyone wants to have to go through.”

Investigators with both departments say it may take several weeks to determine a cause of death for the two children.
