WICHITA — City leaders were divided, but ultimately voted 5-2 to move forward with building a new central library in Wichita.
Today, the council agreed to hire GLMV Architecture as the building design team for the $30 million library.
In Nov. 2007, the City Council adopted a bond resolution to acquire the future site of the facility at 711 West 2nd Street in Wichita.
The two-level facility will be approximately 102,000 square feet, and will serve as a gateway and anchoring destination for downtown, according to the resolution presented to the council.
The contract would grant about $430,000 to GLMV Architecture during the initial phase of the project.
Councilmen Pete Meitzner and Jeff Blubaugh voted against this resolution, but opted for an amended plan to do more research. That plan failed with a 2-5 vote.
