Cowley College soccer players were frustrated during a public forum Wednesday night.
The forum, created to discuss concerns on campus, overlooked the recent elimination of the men’s and women’s soccer programs, some players said.
“For the 45 kids that got cut, it does make an impact,” said sophomore soccer player Kierstyn Legg. “It does make an impact on how you feel emotionally and how you go upon this whole thing.”
Legg stayed for most of the event, saying that she was proud of how the community wanted to speak up for the players.
“It makes me feel like we weren’t just the only ones fighting, that the community stepped up and wanted, like wants the program there,” she said.
After Cowley College president Clark Williams resigned last week, head women’s soccer coach Dane Straight said he has faith for what’s next. He coached what may be his final game this past weekend, after 6 years at Cowley.
“We don’t know if there’s anything that going to go through the door, but at least there’s at least hope, and that’s something we haven’t had in a couple of weeks,” he said. “You know, I hope that’s not our last games, I hope those scrimmages aren’t our last games. It was a little rough at the end of Saturday. it was kind of bittersweet for me. I hope it’s not the end,
Interim president Tony Crouch said the board of trustees will address soccer at it’s next meeting. That’s set for 6:45 on Monday, April 21, at McAtee Dining Center, 206 South 4th Street, Arkansas City, KS. All Board of Trustee meetings are open to the public.
