The rumor mill has been rampant as police investigate a potential bomb scare Sunday afternoon.
“All I heard was a big boom and then I heard another big boom,” said Heather Mehl, who was bartending that day.
“I was taking people’s beer orders and I was walking inside and then that’s when it went off again. I couldn’t tell you where it came from,” echoed Heather’s sister, Autumn.
Police received a call about an explosive device at Gold Diggers bar before 5 p.m. Sunday. The device was eventually found in an outdoor area behind the establishment. It was later determined that the pipe with gunpowder was a noisemaker — not a bomb. However, it was dismantled as a precaution.
“I don’t think anybody meant any harm in whatever it was,” Heather said. “I think it was just, you know, people trying to have fun. It got a little out of hand, whatever was going on out there.”
The Hutchinson Police Department does not plan to press charges against the person responsible for the noisemaker.
