The primary election is just days away, but voters are already heading to the polls for advance voting.
More than 700 people voted on Thursday in Sedgwick County.
“That’s exciting for us because obviously that’s why we open up these locations is to make it more convenient for people to go vote and so they don’t have to then go to the polls on election day,” said Election Commissioner Tabitha Lehman.
Her office has been quite busy over the past few weeks, gearing up for the 16 locations people can go to for advanced voting.
DON’T FORGET YOUR ID
Lehman wants to remind people to remember proper identification.
Back in 2011, Gov. Sam Brownback signed the Kansas Secure and Fair Elections Act into law. An ID is required to vote, but staff members at one advanced polling location in Derby said the haven’t had any problem.
However, if you do forget an ID, the election office can work with voters, Lehman said.
“If they don’t have ID with them, they’ll be asked to vote a provisional ballot, and they can then, they will be given a receipt at the polling place,” she said.
Then, the voter will have to bring their proper ID to the election office by 11 a.m. on August 11.
PLAN AHEAD FOR CERTAIN LOCATIONS
Lehman also said that this Saturday could be busy at two locations. The Sedgwick County Zoo will have a Back to School Bash. The zoo houses one of the polling spots.
“Parking may be an issue if you’re just going there to vote, so you may want to pick the other sites,” she said. “And, it looks like parking may be an issue at machinists hall because you have the convoy of hope going on across the street.”
