A fireworks stand in Augusta hopes to keep officers safe.
The Lions Club of Augusta is selling sparklers, smoke bombs, firecrackers and more. The group’s goal is to turn a $6,000 profit to buy new ballistic vests for each officer serving the city.
“I think it’s been great because funds have been cut in a lot of areas,” said Ellen Banister of Augusta.
“People need to support their community and the Lions do a great job doing it,” echoed resident Jennifer Tolley.
To entice customers, the Lions Club’s sales are tax-free. For people who spend $100, they get a 10 percent discount. Purchases of $500 get a 25 percent discount. They also have a drawings for large fireworks packages.
Any amount that exceeds the $6,000 goal will go toward the group’s other projects, like scholarships for students, buying books for pediatric hospitals, diabetes education and hunger prevention, to name a few.
“We do a lot of work for the visually impaired,” said Chuck Korte Lions Club president. “Somebody needs glasses, we’re there for them, somebody has a fire, we send them money to regroup. Any kind of help that they could give us would be appreciated cause it’s good for the community, good for our town.”
The Augusta Lions Club fireworks sale will go from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on July 2-4. It’s located at 2900 North Ohio in Augusta.
