The City of Wichita will soon sell guns seized from crimes.
More than 200 weapons will be auctioned online, including 51 long guns and 168 hand guns, said Capt. Scott Heimerman with Wichita Police.
A new state law requires that the city either passes these seized weapons to police or sell them to the public. A stipulation to the law, however, is that the city cannot sell weapons in poor condition or those involved in certain crimes.
“If the weapon’s involved in certain violent crimes, we can’t sell them,” Heimerman said. “We have to keep them. Obviously, if it’s involved in a homicide, we’ll hang on to that evidence — all that evidence — until the offender is most likely the offender involved is dead.”
Heimerman said he does not know when the items will go to auction or where they will go at this point. The department is working with online auction site PropertyRoom.com. Property Room works with more than 3,000 police departments and cities across the country. However, it will not sell the items directly on the site. Property Room will contract the work out to another vendor, Heimerman said.
