Numerous cattle were either killed or on the loose following a semi truck rollover overnight on a Wichita-area highway.
The Kansas Highway Patrol said the driver of a semi lost control of the truck, possibly due to weather conditions, around 3:30 this morning on K-96 near 119th Street West in Maize. Nearly 60 cows were in the truck trailer and some escaped. Five cows were killed.
The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office worked with the Kansas Highway Patrol, animal control and other organizations to wrangle the cattle back to safety.
K-96 was closed for hours following the accident. Late Wednesday morning, crews had to upright the semi and trailer. The westbound lanes were opened around 11:15 a.m., while eastbound lanes opened shortly before noon.
Traffic is moving normally in the area again.
