American Idol’s Didi Benami made a splash in the Season 9, bringing a fresh, folksy sound to the Fox show.

She was a show frontrunner, best known for dedicating her performances to her college roommate: Rebecca Joy Lear.

Rebecca died in a car accident during winter break her freshman year. She and Didi were both aspiring musicians. She says Rebecca inspired her to move to Hollywood and chase her dreams.

Didi ultimately placed 10th in this season’s show.

We spoke with Rebecca’s family about the Idol’s special dedication through her first solo, “Terrified,” originally performed by Katharine McPhee.

I like this promo–primarily because spots like this always have emotion–but I loved using the music from Didi’s performance for the music bed. It’s a nice, subtle effect. Makes it personal.
