Finding a job in today’s economy can be tough, but a non-profit in Sedgwick County has helped one man find success.

Among dozens of workers are Johnson Controls, John Larkin stands out above the rest.

“He’s always in a good mood,” said Dan Hecht, warehouse manager. “He’s always happy. Everyone respects him. He’s just a good individual, quite frankly.”

At 44 years old, Larkin is about to celebrate 18 years with the company, but some say his success isn’t ordinary. Larkin has a developmental disability.

Hecht said though Larkin may be quiet at times, he’s achieved a lot on the work floor.

“I’ve tried to put some of these boxes together,” Hecht said. “It might take me five minutes to figure it out. John figures it out in like seconds. You kind of step back and go, ‘How did he do that?’”

Part of Larkin’s success is due to job training at Starkey, a non-profit organization that helps individuals like Larkin. The group offers community services and job training, among other opportunities. More than 520 people use Starkey, including 30 people who have found part- and full-time work through its services.

Larkin no longer needs mentoring through Starkey. He currently works full-time at Johnson Controls in shipping and receiving.

“I think John takes tremendous pride in his job,” said Jamie Opat with Starkey. “He really identifies with his co-workers here. It’s a big part of his identity. He’s just a standard of success for our employment program at Starkey. We’re very proud of him.”

Larkin is proud of his job too.

Yet, he has another passion – everything black and yellow.

“I say, ‘Go Shockers,’ Larkin exclaimed. Co-workers say he often sports Shockers gear, and he is anxious to see the team play Thursday night in the Sweet 16.

As he cheers on the Shoxs, many here in Wichita are cheering him on for 18 years of success — and many more.

“John’s earned the job,” Hecht said. “He comes to work every day. He works hard. We all enjoy him.”
