More than 13 million iPhones were sold during this past weekend, marking a new record for Apple.

Yet, if you’re in the market to upgrade your phone, you may want to sell your old device, said tech expert Katie Linendoll.

SELLING A NEWER SMART PHONE
If you own a newer smartphone model, Linendoll said your best bet is to sell the device yourself. She found that most cell phone owners will find great benefits on sites like eBay.

“An iPhone 6, a 64-gig model, for example, gets you around $480 on eBay and then some, so it can really put some extra money in your pocket,” she said. “Then, of course, you can turn around and get a new iPhone on eBay and spend that money wisely.”

Linendoll said that while the site may be intimidating for first-time sellers, eBay has simple step-by-step instructions on getting a device listed and sold quickly. Sellers can have a set price with a “buy it now” option or let people bid for the deal.

SELLING AN OLDER DEVICE
For those who have a phone sitting in their drawer at home, Linendoll said people should sell. She said even with the booming sales of the latest iPhone, shoppers are always looking for basic devices.

“People want a simpler life, so don’t rule it out,” she said. “Especially in the sense that you don’t even have to log in to eBay to just a value of how much that phone can be, so you’re not losing anything. Might as well see how much you can get for it, as opposed to just sitting in a drawer.”

BUYING AN OLDER SMART PHONE FOR TRADE-IN
Some may find that a cell phone company may give them a good trade-in for an older device.

KAKE News reporter Annette Lawless traded in an iPhone 3S, which is about five years old. A company allowed her to trade-in the device for a savings of about $100 a year on a phone lease. People could consider buying an older smart phone online. Similar iPhone 3S’s are being sold on eBay for around $60, so people may consider buying a device to use as a trade-in, so they can get a better leasing deal. You may want to visit with the cell phone provider first, just to be sure that they’ll take your phone for a deal.
