DEMOCRATS SIT-IN PROTEST OVER GUN CONTROL
Republicans who control the House are calling it a publicity stunt, but Democrats who have been conducting a sit-in on the chamber floor since Wednesday morning are calling it a success at least in bringing attention to their cause. They are demanding votes on gun control measures.
House Speaker Paul Ryan called the sit-in a gimmick. Yet, Democratic Congressman John Lewis says, “it’s not a gimmick for me.” He calls it “a down payment on ending gun violence.”
Congressman Al Green says he and his fellow Democrats are demonstrating to the American public “why we can’t get votes on common sense safety measures” on guns.
The atmosphere has gotten testy at times. At one point overnight, Republican Congressman Louie Gohmert of Texas approached the Democrats and yelled, “Radical Islam!” Congresswoman Corrine Brown of Florida shouted back, and the pair had to be separated by colleagues.
