If you have unused prescriptions in your house, this weekend is your chance to get rid of the medications safely.
It’s the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Drug Take Back Day, an effort to prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths.
Police departments and pharmacies across the country are participating on the event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 28.
It’s estimated that 6.4 million Americans have abused controlled prescriptions drugs, according to a 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. The study revealed that people who abuse medications most often find them in the homes of friends and family.
During the National Take Back in October 2017, more than 5,300 sites collected 912,305 pounds – that’s 456 tons – of drugs. With the same event in Kansas, 85 sites collected more than 13,000 pounds of unused prescriptions.
