I’m proud of our team at KAKE News!

My news director, David Williams, has been kind and trusted me with entering our station in awards contests. Last year, this team of producer Lester Rowe, Meteorologist Jay Prater, producer Tim May and I won two Murrow Awards. (Also, not pictured: photographer Brennan Barger and musician/composer Jacob Smith. We won for our digital and interactive storytelling for a documentary on the 2007 Greensburg tornado and for my investigative series Missing in Kansas.

Today, I found out that Frank Waugh, Lester Rowe, Hannah King, Pilar Pedraza, Andy Duffy and I won for our storytelling. I entered our work for five separate projects for a digital storytelling entry:
– Dawn of Doppler (Frank and Lester)
– Missing in Kansas (my baby!)
– A Serial Killer’s Daughter (my exclusive interview with Kerri Rawson, the daughter of Dennis Rader.)
– Untold Story: Kari Newell and the Marion County Record (Andy and Pilar)
– Krista Martin Cold Case (Hannah and Lester)

You can watch some of those reports here:

This marks my fourth Murrow Award. I earned my first when I worked at Fox 8 News in Cleveland for a feature news story on a little girl and the life-saving donation from someone close to her. It was a part of a beautiful series I had been documenting for weeks, and to be invited into the operating room to share it — that was something I’ll never forget. I love in-depth storytelling, whether it’s gritty crime stories to heartwarming features.

Thank you, Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) and my boss for trusting me once again. I’ve been spearheading our entries every year. It’s nice to take a look back and see the growth.
