Wichita — It may be one of the hottest jobs in town.
“Doesn’t put you in a bad mood,” says Conlee Borchard, worker at Heavenly Snow. “Keeps you pretty positive.”
And when it heats up, so does business.
“Try to get them out as fast as you can. It’s hard when you’re by yourself. But you’ll pull through,” she says. “It’s a relief when all the cars get through. And you’re like, OK, they’re done. They all got their snow cones.”
And it’s a treat one Wichita family cannot resist.
“We always look for a nice refreshing treat, and these snow cones are just that,” says Al Flores.
His wife and four sons come here up to a few times a week.
“Yeah, the great thing about getting different flavors is that you can share.”
With 70 different kinds… in 13 years… it’s one small business turned big hit.
But for snow cone stand owner Joy Wood, it wasn’t an easy start.
“At first they didn’t even know what it was,” she says,” and so I had to hand out samples constantly to get people started.”
And now?
“If I wasn’t in town, they’d probably just have a big fit,” says Wood. “They just get to where they love them so much.”
Located near one of the busiest interchanges in Wichita, Wood says the biggest challenge is to get people out of their cars—and away from the competition.
“Sonic has a really good slush. And Dairy Queen also, and they have a really good product,” she says. “It’s just mine is just a little bit different.”
Attracting all sorts of customers…
“They’re kids! Their eyes light up when they stop and get ’em a snow cone,” Wood says. “And the adults are just as big of fans as the kids–if not bigger.”
For a taste bringing Wichitans back again—and again.
What a fantastic feature package, Annette. Bravo. I’ll definitely have to show my boss.
Great story. My teacher says you were quite the news legend at K-State. It’s great to know I have something to live up too. Got any other fun stories to share with the rest of the class? Missing you in Manhattan!
Cool story. Our class loved it. Makes me want a snow cone real bad!
