ELYRIA, Ohio–She’s served her community for more than 40 years, but now Betty Blair bids farewell.
It was an emotional goodbye for outgoing Lorain county commissioner. She’s served on the commission for 20 years, but was also Carlisle Township clerk 23 years before that.

“Certainly closing a chapter in my life,” Blair said. “I have no idea of what lies ahead, none of us do. But, I have certainly enjoyed serving the county. It’s a dream job.”

Friends and family cheered Blair at today’s meeting, and of course, it wasn’t without a few laughs.

Fellow County Commissioner Lori Kokoski crowned Blair with an unusual gift.

“It’s not a dog, right,” Blair asked, as she was opening the present.

Then, the room was filled with laughter as Blair donned the gift on top of her head.

She received a Betty Boop stocking cap.

“The boys living in my house will be jealous,” she said.

A mother of six and grandmother of 14, Blair’s children say they look forward to spending more time with mom.

“It’s 43 years of public service, and it’s been a part of our family,” said Marna Blair, Betty’s oldest daughter. “But in addition to all that, she also raised six children. It’s been quite a wild ride.”

Marna also said this is a chance for her mom to take advantage of experiences she hasn’t had in a long time.

“She can fill herself with things that she likes,” Marna said. “She’s a very accomplished pianist, so she’s playing for a singing group and she sings with them. She’s getting to do some of the other things that have, kind of like, been on the back burner because she’s been so passionate about her job.”
